This week, we had the pleasure of welcoming a group of 15 young people from *Work Your Way*, a Cornwall Rural Community Charity (CRCC) programme designed to support individuals aged 16-24 with learning disabilities. Funded by Adult Education, the programme helps participants develop personal skills, gain confidence, and prepare for employment through hands-on training and individual work placements.
A Day in the Life of a Baker
The group arrived at our bakery at 10:30 AM, eager to experience a real workplace environment and learn about the different roles in food production. After meeting on the mezzanine, we split them into two groups for a structured experience:
👨🍳 Group A – Joined our production manager Steve for a behind-the-scenes bakery tour. They got to see first-hand how our breads, pastries, and sweet treats are made, learning about the ingredients, techniques, and equipment we use daily. They even had the opportunity to try some hands-on baking!
📋 Group B – Took part in a company induction and interview workshop with Abi our HR manager and our managing director Lauren. We introduced them to the skills and expectations of a workplace, answering their questions about working in the food industry and offering insights into the different career opportunities available at Baker Tom.
After a short break, the groups swapped over so that everyone could get a full experience of both aspects of the day.
Exploring Future Career Opportunities
Work Your Way offers two main routes: a supported internship programme and a work experience pathway, both designed to help young people transition into employment. During their visit, they were able to see not just the baking process but also other key roles within our business, including packaging, customer service, and delivery logistics.
At Baker Tom, we know how important it is to create an inclusive and welcoming environment, and we were inspired by the enthusiasm and curiosity of our visitors. Before they left, each participant received a Baker Tom goody bag filled with delicious treats to take home!
A Big Thank You
We’d like to extend a huge thank you to the Work Your Way team for visiting and to our own staff for making the group feel so welcome. It’s fantastic to be able to showcase our industry and hopefully inspire the next generation of food lovers and bakers.
To our team: Thank you for your cooperation and for greeting our guests with such warmth.
